Bro. Hobbs has
relinquished this space for this week only. Since
we are in the process of selecting new elders and
deacons, the following article from The bulletin
Digest seems appropriate: |
Desire is the first step in a man
becoming an Elder. However, desire alone does not qualify
a man. God has outlined qualities He wants (I Tim. 3:1-7
and Titus 1:5-9) These can be divided into six categories:
Community
Qualities. He is to be "above
reproach" (I Tim. 3:2). He is so well
thought of that if someone were to attack his
character, no one would believe it. He must have
the respect of those outside the church as well
as fellow believers.
Character
Qualities. He is temperate, self
controlled, respectable" (I Tim. 3:2) He
must allow himself no indulgence that would
undermine his character or mar his reputation.
Mental
Qualities. He is to be "disciplined"(Titus
1:8). He is to be able to teach(I Tim 3:2).
Before he can teach, he must be taught. Samuel
Brengle lamented, "Oh, for more
..leaders
who know how to read hearts and apply truth to
the need of the people. As a good physician reads
his patients and applies remedies to their ills."
By his knowledge and mental prowess, he must be
able to "encourage others by sound doctrine."(Titus
1:9)
Personality
Qualities. One may have all the "Facts",
but if not able to show Christ in his life, he is
not the leader God wants. He is to be "gentle
.not
quarrelsome" (I Tim. 3:3) He is "not
overbearing, not quick tempered
.not violent"(Titus
1:7).
Family
Qualities. Paul's question was, "If
anyone does not know how to manage his own
family, how can he take care of God's church?"
(I Tim. 3:5) The NIV translates Titus 1:6; "An
elder must be the husband of but one wife, a man
whose children believe and are not open to the
charge of being wild and disobedient." The
testing ground for an elder is how he has done
with his own family.
Experience
Qualities. He is not a "novice"
(I Tim. 3:6). The NIV says "recent convert."
A seed must take rood, develop a plant, then bear
fruit. It takes time to grow an elder.
