What is your favorite verse in the Bible? Most of us have one, and many Bible classes begin with this question. So, what is your favorite verse? A friend of mine was in a class that started just this way and the answer one lady give brought the whole class to a halt. While others indicated the "Classics" (like John 3:16, Romans 8:12 and Colossians 3:17) this lady said, "Of all the verses in the Bible, I like the one that begins "And it came to pass.."
What? The whole class looked at her like she had the plague. People pulled their chairs back a little so as not to be infected. But she held her ground as she began to explain. She told about a hard life with many bumps, pains, and heartaches. She told of extended segments of her life that were painfully difficult to endure.
And what had sustained her throughout these hard times was God's promise that nothing earthly -good or bad- lasts forever. The only eternal things are life with God or life without God. Comfort in His arms or torment in hell. Eternal joy or everlasting sorrow. From that point of view the trials of this world, and even it's temporal pleasures, take on a different meaning. To a lady worn down by life, the promise that all hurt is temporary can be great comfort. And That same promise can give strength to endure one more day. Come to think of it, I believe I have a new favorite verse.

Once again our thanks to Rick Offill for leading our song service on Sunday. It is a great relief to have men such a Rick who is willing to fill in wherever needed, whenever needed. Thanks Rick.

Our inaugural Pot-luck Friendship meal was very well attended. We ad between 70 and 75 present (it is hard to get an exact count with all the moving around). The facility has much more seating space and does not give a feeling of being "crowded" as did our old facility. We have space to seat over 100, so we look forward to the day when we will need to expand again!!
Following the meal, we had our bi-monthly men's business meeting. If you were not able to attend and want to know what happened, ask Ed for a copy of the minutes.

Thank-You notes have been received from the Medina, Cherokee and New Mexico Children's Homes for our December contributions.

Gayle Cheek wishes to thank everyone for their prayers and good wishes as she went forward to take her French language exam last Saturday. Through no fault of her own, she was not able to take the test but it has been re-scheduled for later this month.

The financial statement for December is on the bulletin board.

        "Dear Christian Friends,

I wish to express my appreciation for your thoughtfulness during and in-between my hospital visits this year.
        Thank you so very much."

MAKE EVERY DAY
THANKSGIVING

Thank you, God, for everything --
the big things and the small,
For every good gift comes from God --
the giver of them all,
Too often we accept
without any thanks or praise
The gifts God sends as blessing
each day in many ways,
O, make us more aware, dear God,
of little daily graces
That come to us with sweet surprise
from never-dreamed-of-places,
And help us to remember
that the key to life and living
is to make each prayer a prayer of thanks
and every day THANKSGIVING.

From the pen of JOHN HOBBS....

Changes in the Church

I am totally against changing doctrine! We must stand for the truth which never changes (John 17:7/ I Peter 1:23). Too many churches of Christ are changing Christ's Doctrine. This is sin Clear and simple!

However, in methods we must be open to change. This is an old saying: "If you do what you have always done, you will always get what you have always got." True? True!

Ninth and Main must be willing to change it's methods! For years we have experienced decline. Therefore, we must do something different. We are! Here are some things that have changed:

  1. We now have an outreach program that coincides with our potluck fellowship meals.
  2. We now have a visitation program.
  3. We now have a Bible Correspondence program.
  4. We now have scheduled our first annual Leadership Dinner to chart the direction of Ninth and Main. Saturday night, February 1, 2003 at 5:00 P.M. the entire congregation is invited to the building for a meal and a meeting. We will discuss the work of the church and give "input".. We now have an outreach program that coincides with our potluck fellowship meals.

If you do not come, do not complain that you do not have input to the direction of the church. If you want input, then come. Do not gripe and complain if things do not go your way. Brother Gary Hill will be our guest speaker. You will really enjoy his lesson!

Put Saturday night February 1st, 2003 on your calendar and make plans to come. You will enjoy the evening! Everyone is invited and encouraged to come. We want to see your smiling faces as we discuss "changes".

In Christian Love,
John Hobbs
