Is There Nothing In a Name?
Shakespeare once
wrote, "Arose by any other name would smell as sweet." From this
some have said that any name in religion is acceptable. But,
which inspired writer taught this? NOT ONE! Acts 4:12 says,
"Neither is there salvation in any other name given under heaven
whereby we must be saved." Colossians 3:17 states, "And whatsoever
ye do in word and deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving
thanks to God and the father by Him."
At one time the lord's
Church stood tall in its defense of the name "Church of Christ" because
it represented a biblical name, authorized by Scripture (Romans 16:16).
It should be important to seek to live according to the authority of
God's word (Matthew 4:4). Sadly, many today place little importance
upon the authority of God's word. One day they will meet God's word
at the day of judgment (John 12:48).
Unfortunately, liberals in our own
brotherhood do not believe in the unique identity of the one New
Testament Church. Jesus only died for one church, established
only one church, and will only save one church (Eph. 5:23). There
is only "one baptism"--"one body"--"one faith" (Eph. 4:4-6).
This is not popular, but it is biblical.
In reality, I am glad some churches
are taking the name "church of Christ" off their sign. Why? Because
they are not a "church of Christ". They do not believe and teach
the "one body"--"one baptism"--"one faith" as commanded by the Lord.
Consequently, they should not wear the name "church of Christ". The
Church that belongs to Christ wears His name and preaches His doctrine.
It is time to stand up and be counted!

Christian Love,
