Bible Reading at Its Best
By Kris Groda

To get the best out of daily Bible reading, there must be a commitment on your part to read. For that to happen, there must be a “hunger and thirst after righteousness” (Mt. 5:6) and a real “delight in the law” (Psalm 1:2). Timothy was to “give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine” (1 Tim.4:13). To “give attendance” to something was to give attention to it, to apply one's mind or effort to it. The English Standard Version says, “devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation, to teaching.” A noble example of those who were dedicated to Bible reading might be the Bereans Luke referenced, who “received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so”(Acts 17:11).

Perhaps you would like to be a better Bible student. Maybe you would like to be more prepared for the Bible class or the sermon. In such cases, you might solicit the outlines or list of scriptures from those doing the teaching. Or maybe it's the case, that you would like a more guided study. Bible reading schedules are available in the foyer and online. There are canonical and topical schedules available on the internet.

Whether you decide to study by yourself, with a relative, friend or in a group, such as your bible class or a home bible study group, you need to keep some important principles of Bible reading in mind.

IMPORTANT BIBLE READING CONCEPTS.

READ THE BIBLE SYSTEMATICALLY. I used to wonder how anyone could understand the Old Testament. Keeping the chronology straight seemed next to impossible, plus, trying to learn the people and their names, who could possibly get the big picture? Well, as it turned out, it was not so difficult once I got started; the key is to understand the context. One of my Bible instructors drilled it into us, “Context, Context, Context”! Consider the immediate context and the over all context.

If you are having trouble keeping up with the story line, jot some notes and create an outline of what is happening – you'll find it's more enjoyable! Word of warning: If you're not considering the context of the scripture you are reading, you might come away with some strange doctrine or contradiction, at the very least, it will leave you confused. Remember to consider who did the writing, to whom the book or epistle was written and in what way the commands or principles are to be applied. Someone has said, “Context is the major principle of interpretation whereby a person's understanding of a given passage is shown to be consistent with truth”.

READ THE BIBLE ALONG WITH AN AUDIO BIBLE. There are plenty of good audio Bible formats available to fit your need. There are audio tapes, CD's, mp3 formats and they come in most any version imaginable. I use Alexander Scourby's (KJV) online audio Bible to read along with. It helps keep your attention, it also helps with reading comprehension, and word pronunciation. You'll be surprised at how it helps in covering a lot of Bible text in short amount of time. This is also good for time spent in the car.

USE BIBLE STUDY TOOLS. Sometimes there is need to consult the original language and get the definition. You don't have to know Greek to go to heaven, but it's good to use the language tools that have been made available. After all, God does expect us to learn His will and has communicated it through human language. Every student ought to have a Bible dictionary and concordance. There are tons of word-study tools available on the internet. Make use of them if you can.

Christ prayed for the attainable condition of unity (John 17). Truth brings unity about, therefore, Christ taught that truth was both desirable and attainable (John 8:32; 17:17). When we read with this kind of attitude, it is certain, we will experience bible reading at its best!

Why We Encourage Everyone to Read the Bible
By Delton Haun
Jesus Once Prayed

“Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.”
(John 17:17)
  1. The Bible is God's Revelation.

It was written over a period of approximately sixteen hundred years by about forty penmen who were guided by the Holy Spirit (2 Peter 1:21). It was written to show God's interest in us and to point out our duty to him. In the Bible the phrase, “Thus saith the Lord....” occurs over and over again in Isaiah 7:7, Ezekiel 3:11, Amos 1:3,6,11,13, etc. The Bible reveals God and how he reaches out to us through Jesus, and the response we are called on to make to him.

  1. It Tells of Things that Happened Long Ago That Have a Bearing on All Humanity.

These include the creation, the fall, the promises of God, the development of his plan, Jesus and his teachings, his death, his resurrection, his promise and the effect all of these should have on us – things we need desperately to know.

  1. It Tells About Jesus.

It includes prophecy concerning him given hundreds of years before his birth announcing who he would be, what he would do and how he would bring salvation to trusting obedient souls. The hope of every individual rests on Jesus. We must not neglect learning all we can about him the blessings he offers.

  1. The Bible Explains How we are to Obey and Serve Jesus.

Pardon is granted to those accountable souls who learn the truth and obey it. To remain ignorant is disastrous. The answers we need are in the Bible. It needs to be studied so that we may understand our greatest personal needs. We seek not only a place in this world, we seek also a place in the eternal world to come.

  1. The Bible Tells Us of the Future.

It deals with the end of time, the ultimate re-appearance of Jesus, the judgment and what lies

beyond. These are coming events in which we should have an intense interest. We need to know what is coming, what the future will bring.

  1. The Bible Tells About the Church That Jesus Built (Matthew 16:18).

That it is, how and where it began, how it is to be organized and its place in God's plan. The Bible points out Jesus died to purchase it (Ephesians 5:25), and that the saved are in it (Acts 2:47). The place of the church, the work of the church and its destiny are all made clear in the scriptures. We need to know these things.

  1. The Bible Teaches How We are to Worship and Honor God.

It is a mistake to assume anything and everything that can be done is acceptable. The right way must be in spirit and in truth (John 4:24). How we are to worship is explained.

  1. The Bible Warns of False Teaching and False Teachers.

Accepting ideas and practices that are contrary to God's will, as stated in the Bible, will not bring the blessings we need. We should resolve to learn of the dangers. We need to read and heed the warnings given. Our eternal destiny may well depend on it.

  1. The Bible is the Supreme Authority in All Religious Matters.

What it says is final. No man has authority to teach anything that is contrary to it. Any and all gospels that differ with it are rejected (Gal. 1:8-9).

  1. The Bible Teaches Us How to be Faithful to the Lord.

It is the faithful servant who will be commended in the judgment (Matthew 25:31) It is the faithful servant who will be invited to enter heaven and enjoy God's blessings forever.

Is it any wonder why we urge people to read the Bible? It is God's book. We really can't afford to treat it with indifference.

“For the word of God is quick and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:12).

I Supposed I Knew My Bible

I supposed I knew my Bible,
Reading piecemeal, hit or miss,
Now a bit of John or Matthew,
Now a snatch of Genesis,

Certain chapters of Isaiah,
Certain Psalms (the twenty-third)
Twelfth of Romans, First of Proverbs--
Yes, I thought I knew the Word!

But I found that thorough reading
Was a different thing to do,
And the way was unfamiliar
When I read the Bible through.

You who like to play at Bible,
Dip and dabble, here and there.
Just before you kneel aweary,
And yawn through a hurried prayer;

You who treat the Crown of Writings
As you treat no other book--
Just a paragraph disjointed,
Just a crude impatient look--

Try a worthier procedure
Try a broad and steady view;
You will kneel in very rapture
When you read the Bible through!
                     --Amos R. Wells
